Consuming (the) Victorians

2016 Annual Conference of the British Association for Victorian Studies

Press & Media

Programme and Abstracts Booklets

Delegates were provided with a comprehensive programme booklet containing the full schedule of panels, sessions, and events across the three days of the conference. A separate booklet of abstracts and biographical notes was also made available, offering detailed information about each paper and its author.

Social Media

The conference used the hashtag #BAVS2016 to mark conference-related posts and discussions on social media. Delegates and followers were encouraged to contribute to the online conversation by sharing observations, insights, and highlights from panels and plenary sessions. A summary of the conference proceedings and key themes can be found in the post-conference reflections article.

Conference Posters

In keeping with the theme of consumption, two distinctive BAVS 2016 posters were produced for the conference. The poster images featured interiors from two of Cardiff's most notable Victorian-era buildings: Cardiff Castle, a medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion, and Morgan Arcade, a Victorian shopping arcade in the centre of the city.

The poster images were sourced from freely licensed photography and were available in both web-ready and print-ready formats. The print versions could be produced in both A3 and A4 sizes for display at institutions and departmental notice boards.

Conference Bags

BAVS 2016 featured four different delegate tote bags, each with a unique design created for the conference. The designs reflected the conference theme of Victorian consumption, drawing on imagery and motifs associated with nineteenth-century consumer culture. The bags were produced as practical conference souvenirs for delegates to use during and after the event.

Header and Poster Imagery

The header and poster images for BAVS 2016 were taken from the interior of Cardiff Castle, the medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion, and the ceiling of Morgan Arcade, a Victorian shopping arcade in the centre of Cardiff. The use of these architectural spaces reflected the conference's engagement with Victorian material culture and the built environment as sites of consumption and display.

Media Enquiries

Members of the press or media with enquiries about the conference were invited to get in touch through the contact page. The conference organisers welcomed coverage of the event and were happy to provide additional information, high-resolution images, or arrange interviews with keynote speakers and session chairs.
